Camden County is situated in the midst of the great urbanized Eastern Seaboard stretching from Boston in the north to Washington, D.C. in the south. This intensely developed region, often called megalopolis, is made up of a number of intimately linked metropolitan areas. The Philadelphia Metropolitan area forms one of the more important links in this urban sprawl. Camden County, which is a part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan area, is closely associated with the development of the Philadelphia urban core. The urban growth process, generated by activities in Philadelphia, has exerted a circumvential growth pattern around Camden City. Consequently, the largest share of Camden County's industrial development has taken place along the Delaware River. In addition, the work activity center in Philadelphia and the recreational activity around the Atlantic City Seashore area has created a linear development force along the axis of Philadelphia and Atlantic City. As a result, transportation routes have emerged along the length of the county. Thus, the predominent growth forces are the Philadelphia urban core, and the transportation routes of the county.
